Scientific Directorate

The Scientific Director is responsible for the planning and coordination of biomedical translational research and public health research at Besta, as stipulated by Italian Legislative Decree No. 288 of 16 October 2003, and consonant with the research programme delineated by Article 12-bis of Legislative Decree No. 502 of 30 December 1992 (and successive modifications) and the health research programme delineated by the Region of Lombardy. The Scientific Director’’s main role is to promote and coordinate clinical and pre-clinical research, paying particular attention to translatability, innovation, collaboration with other bodies, and ethical acceptability. The Scientific Director also promotes and coordinates research in the area of public health and disability, and, in collaboration with the Medical director, is also concerned with preventive and rehabilitative medicine. Finally the Scientific Director oversees training and education.

Consonant with the Italian Ministry of Health’’s new three-year plan for research, approved by the National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research and the State-Regions Conference, the main strategic research areas for 2009-2011 are:
