Admission and Discharge

Admission is decided by a specialist physician of the Besta Foundation after examination of the patient presenting as an outpatient or after direct consultation with an external physician.

Patients may be admitted under the Italian National Health Service or privately.

Waiting times

Waiting times for admission depend on the illness and its severity. The secretary of the department concerned will communicate the admission date with adequate notice.

What documents to bring on the day of admission

  • Request for admission (referral) signed by family doctor (GP) if admission is under the Italian National Health Service)
  • Regional Health Card or National Health Service Personal Health Card
  • Fiscal Code
  • Identity Card or identifying documentation (e.g. passport)
  • Clinical documentation (clinical records relating to previous admissions, examination results, details of current treatments)

After the documents have been checked at reception, the patient proceeds or is accompanied to the designated ward where the Ward Nurse will receive the patient, show him/her the allotted room, and advise the physician who will complete the admission examination.

The day of discharge

A letter of discharge will be given to the patient on the day of discharge. This letter will summarise the diagnosis and provide detailed instructions regarding treatments that need to be continued.
